Synaesthesia
Synaesthesia, a neurological disorder that blurs the boundaries of sensory perception, transcends conventional experiences by enabling individuals to see sound, hear colour, or even feel emotions as tactile sensations. Synaesthesia (2016) delves into this intriguing phenomenon through an artistic investigation set against the backdrop of Gqeberha's surroundings, offering a fresh perspective on the Landscape through the lens of new media. The project began with the capture of soundscapes in significant locations, which were subsequently visualized by projecting them through water beneath a light source to capture the resulting movement. This process yielded striking still images, which were transformed into photographic prints measuring 1m x 1.5m. The culmination of this artistic endeavour additionally resulted in mesmerizing video, specially formatted to create a floating, holographic spheres when viewed on a flat screen with the placement of a 45° reflective surface at its centre. To further enhance the audience's immersive experience, the paintings were integrated into an augmented reality app. Visitors could scan these images using their smartphone cameras, granting them access to the corresponding holographic videos and audio. Each guest was provided with a small Perspex pyramid upon entering the exhibition, enabling them to personally engage with the AR holographic videos through their own devices.Synaesthesia (2016) embodies an exploration of multimodal art, encouraging the audience to actively partake and immerse themselves in an inquisitive and playful ambience.
